What is the Flesch Index?

The Flesch Reading Ease is a mathematical formula that evaluates text complexity based on the average length of sentences and words. The higher the score, the easier the text is to read.

Score Scale

90-100 (Very Easy): Understandable by 11-year-old children. Simple and direct texts.
60-70 (Standard): Easily understood by 13-15 year old teenagers. Ideal for general audience.
30-50 (Difficult): College level. Requires attention and reading effort.
0-30 (Very Difficult): Advanced academic level. Scientific and technical texts.

Why does readability matter?

How to improve readability?

  • ✓ Use short sentences (15-20 words on average)
  • ✓ Prefer simple and direct words
  • ✓ Avoid unnecessary technical jargon
  • ✓ Break up long paragraphs
  • ✓ Use active voice instead of passive
  • ✓ Add subheadings and lists
  • ✓ Explain complex terms when necessary

💡 Goal for blogs and websites: Aim for a score between 60-70 to reach the widest possible audience. Popular newspapers generally fall within this range.
